Replacing an old municipal stadium, the arena was built in 1990 as part of a wave of development coinciding with Italy's World Cup that summer. The name "Via del Mare" refers to the historic walkway that links Lecce's baroque center with the coast. Since opening the stadium has seen its home club rise and fall between Serie A and the lower divisions, each promotion or relegation leaving its mark on the stands.

A significant renovation in 2018 refitted seating areas, installed new floodlights and reimagined hospitality spaces, giving the venue a modern facelift while preserving its close-up matchday atmosphere.
